In detail
Where each kind of service falls short
Each category gets part of it right. Here is what’s missing from each.
SMS rental sites
Built to receive one code, then move on. Numbers are often shared or recycled, outgoing calls and texts rarely exist, and balances can be locked or expire.
Second-number apps
Polished apps, but tied to app stores and cards, mostly US, Canada and UK, and some ask for ID after you’ve paid.
Business VoIP
Excellent call handling, but per-seat pricing, contracts, company verification and card payments.

Why not just use a free SMS-receiving website?
Those numbers are public and shared: anyone can read the codes and recover the accounts you created with them. A rented number is yours alone, for as long as you keep it — which is what account recovery needs.
Is a second-number app the same thing?
Close, but most need an app store account and a card, many cover only the US, Canada and the UK, and several ask for ID later. Numonym works in the browser, takes crypto, and never asks for documents.
Can Numonym replace my business VoIP provider?
For most small and mid-size teams, yes: numbers in several countries, call flows, queues, unlimited extensions, SIP trunking and a shared SMS inbox — without per-seat pricing or company paperwork.
